DATE: Victorian, c.1891
A gorgeous antique acrostic ring, with coloured paste stones that spell out the popular Victorian sentiment 'REGARD', taking the first letter of each stone to make up the secret message. Ruby paste, Emerald paste, Garnet Paste.. and so on. The chased band is crafted in 9k yellow gold with a scrolled gallery. Its fully hallmarked, circa 1891.
Popular in the Georgian and Victorian eras, acrostic jewellery uses the first letter of each gemstone to convey a secret message or a token of affection. The most popular messages, regard, beloved and dear began in the Georgian era and flourished throughout the Victorian period. I think a truly romantic trend such as this should still be popular today...
